On April 28th Diaspora students had a chance to visit the Babócsai Basa-Kert (Narcissus Park), in the charming village of Babócsa. The day was filled with joy, laughter, learning and practicing Hungarian language, made new friends and enjoyed a delicious picnic with Miss Betty. And yes, those sandwiches were Yummy! Yummy!
Babócsai Basa-Kert is the largest daffodil (Narcissus stellaris) field in Europe. The small but significant garden was declared a protected area in 1977, due to its botanical and cultural-historical importance. The fauna in the area is closely tied to the unique habitat of the garden.
Legend has it that the Basakert hides the remnants of an ancient Árpád-era settlement, which later became a medieval market town and Turkish settlement. In this field was the largest earthen castle in Somogy county. The specialty the star daffodil (Narcissus stellaris), which have been blooming in this area since Turkish times.
Every year, during the flowering season end of April - beginning of May, a lot of visitors come to Basakert, especially during Daffodil Days. In spring, the field is in full bloom, like a breathtaking sea of blossoms. Stunning views and perfect spot for photography, relaxation and good time with friends and family
Of course, we did not miss the chance to take countless pictures. It was an exceptional day surrounded by nature, history, and good company. The Basa-Kert is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to enjoy the simple beauties of springtime in Hungary.
